Bischof Stephen Whitefield Sykes wurde am 1. August 1939 in Bristol geboren. Nach dem Studium der Theologie am St. John’s College, Cambridge (BA, 1961) und in
Rippon Hall, Oxford, wurde er in Cambridge zunächst University Assistant Lecturer in Divinity (1964-68), dann University Lecturer in Divinity (1968-74) und Fellow, Dean und Director of Studies in Theology am St. John’s College (1964-74). Von 1974 bis 1985 war er Van Mildert Professor of Divinity an der Universität Durham und Canon von Durham Cathedral. 1985 folgte er einem Ruf als Regius Professor of Divinity an die Universität Cambridge, gleichzeitig wurde er Fellow of St. John’s College, Cambridge, und Honorary Canon of Ely Cathedral. Von 1990 bis 1999 war er der 76. Bischof von Ely und als solcher Mitglied im House of Lords. Im Herbst 1999 kehrte er als Principal of St. John’s College, Durham, und Professor of Theology nach Durham zurück.
